AbstractAn opera director from the late 1970s to the present, Stefano Vizioli is a significant figure in the Italian opera scene spanning the turn of the century. This book explores his career, beginning with his musical and theatrical training under Pier Luigi Samaritani and Filippo Sanjust, through a wide range of experiences – including those in “distant” theaters and contexts – and the development of cultural diplomacy projects, like Opera Bhutan and Japan Orfeo. The director has not only covered the entire repertoire but, over the years, has developed a distinctive working method, beginning with a close listening to the scores. Direction as transmission: this is the most significant outcome of a vision that has involved high-profile set designers (from Aldo Rossi to Ugo Nespolo) and that regards contemporary directing practice as both a value and a work ethic.
