Abstract

The relationships between music and dramaturgy is always difficult to manage. An eloquent example comes from a recent Venetian production of I Capuleti e i Montecchi: director Arnaud Bernard seems to express substantial distrust in the play’s dramaturgy. On the other hand, Omer Meir Wellber shows that he trusts in this opera and has a clear idea of it, which he pursues with determination. This polarity is also reflected in the relationship with the cast, which on the level of acting leaves space for personal talents, inclinations and experiences, while on the musical level these same values are guided by the conductor’s vision, who oversees the homogeneity of the interpretation, especially with regard to variations and cadenzas.
