Riflessioni sulla ‘sostenibilità musicale’ della seconda versione della Straniera di Bellini

Marco Uvietta

Abstract

After the premiere of La Straniera (Milan, Teatro alla Scala, February 14th, 1829), Bellini revised the opera for his favourite tenor: Giovanni Battista Rubini. The performance of second version took place one year later, on January 13th, 1830, at the Teatro alla Scala.
The main aim of this essay is to consider the musical and dramatic ‘sustainability’ of the second version of Bellini’s La Straniera. Is it a mere adaptation to Rubini’s vocal features or rather the opportunity to improve some passages of the opera? An in-depth analysis of the n. 8 (the Second Act duet between Arturo and Valdeburgo) will help to answer to this question.
